In the Renaissance, art and culture were funded by those with wealth acting as patrons for the artisans. In many ways, this was the ultimate form of “know your audience,” since the artist had to please one person, though anyone could enjoy what was created. Those who had the funds could keep the artisans creating instead of dividing efforts between art and other work.
I wish there was something like that now, something that could fund my writing.
While looking at a few pictures, I realized just seeing a few of them filled me with a simple happiness. Many of these were just pictures, designed to look interesting or make a famous person seem more appealing. Still, I found this joy staying with me for hours at a time just after seeing an image once.
What is more important: the writer or the writing?
This is the question I asked when I started writing “The Case Against Card.” Can we approve of the ideas in Orson Scott Card’s writing, even if we disagree with him on an issue or two? I think we can.

There’s a growing case against the famed writer not just among supporters of gay rights, but also among science fiction fans and writers. Card hasn’t just taken a strong position and made it known publicly. He’s openly pushed his ideology into the open, making his opposition to homosexuals the primary point of discussion whenever his name comes up.
Someone who has won the Hugo and the Nebula twice in a row should not be in this position.
Every writer is shaped by the major elements of their past. In my case, I spent a great deal of time at church, partially because it was the only real side activity my dad ever took part in. The best part about dealing with church was the annual Vacation Bible School. As a kid, it was a fun activity where I got to see other kids and play during the summer. When I was a teenager, I volunteered to help run things, since it got me out of the house for a week.
In 1997, Pastor Jensen decided to take a much more direct hand in how Vacation Bible School worked. Jensen, more than anything else, could be described as a hardliner. He wasn’t a stubborn man, just one who thought the term “tradition” was a little too flexible. As well as he meant, he had a reputation for knocking out the congregation with his sermons.
