NaNoWriMo is just around the corner and I have a lot of writing to work on as it is. Aside from editing Mind & Machine, setting up several promotions, and trying to get the word out about Dreams of Steam II: Brass and Bolts (featuring my story, “Dreams of Freedom”), I need to get back into the swing of writing. So far, I’ve tried working out a new opening to Dual Identities, but I need to dive into something fresh and untapped. For that, I’m calling on you. Continue reading

I got some feedback on my still unnamed steampunk story yesterday. One of the main bits of praise I got was for making the main character, a Texan, sound unique from the other characters who are all Victorian English. Obviously, since the story is prose, I had to make a real effort to pull such a thing off. Mark Twain was noted for his skill at phonetic dialogue, but a lot of writers, like myself, won’t even go there. Continue reading
Just a quick post for now.
I’m putting together a few plans to make progress not just on one project, but on all my writing as a whole. To do that, I need to be able to balance writing, editing, and even promotion of my work. So far, I’ve only been able to do one of those at a time.
On writing, I’ve been writing scenes for The Third Ritual. I don’t have a real focus on that story as of yet, though I know a few plot points that will take place. The biggest thing I’ve been doing with it is working on my descriptions, since my first drafts seems to lack enough necessary detail.
On the editing front, I’m about to go through a real gear shift. I have about a chapter and a half left to edit on Vitamin F and the worst parts of that book are behind me, though I do need to gloss over another chapter from that story again before I can say draft 4 is finished. Once that draft is finished, I’ll be moving on to editing Mind & Machine. It needs a little work as well, since a lot of it is still quite rough.
I have some prep to do for the Missouri Writers’ Conference, which is coming up in a month. I need to send in my application and mark which agents I’d like to talk with. It’ll take a little work, but I’m sure I can get everything set up in time.
Or perhaps I should say Lord Kadium Noshgronko, Brother of God. Kadium is a secretive entity, one not named until the third book of The Golden Hollow, The Third Ritual. He has been trapped for centuries in a realm of almost nonexistence, unable to influence the corporeal world. In corporeal form, he looks something like this (which is an older picture):
What a day.
Managed to find a solid little system to get some new writing done. I set a timer for 20 minutes and did nothing but type. What I typed was a quiet scene of Commander fantasizing about Kathryn Angel. I used it also as a way to develop more detail, skin, temperature, color, movement. Only a few words really, but the kind of thing that establishes who Kathryn is, what Commander wants from her, and why Commander is alone. Continue reading
